When I was a kid I was a real bookworm.

I was gifted books for birthdays and Christmas. I once had a huge telling off for telling my mum I was going to the Library losing all track of time. I sat down with Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” and read it cover to cover. It was only when my Mum marched into the library all red and sweaty that I realised I’d been gone for over 4 hours. I got lost in books. The Secret Garden, The Famous 5, The Chronicles of Narnia.

Over the years I’ve read less and less. With 3 children and then a business to run I had less time. But I was watching more and more. Netflix, Prime and Disney + consumed the space I had for reading.

At the beginning of this year I was feeling pretty rubbish about the amount of time I spend online or in front of the TV. It’s not relaxing. It’s not time I can get back. I missed books. The feel of a book in my hand. The smell of the pages. And the feeling of accomplishment when I’d finished each one.

So I made a promise to myself. I promised to read at least one book a month. It was a reasonable goal. It wasn’t unrealistic, it felt manageable. And it would mean that by the end of the year I would have read 12 books.

We’re nearly in the 9th month of the year and I’ve just finished my 11th book. Not bad going for what was a modest goal.

Mission impossible to micro goals

The thing with goals is that most of us tend to go all or nothing. Zero to infinity in thirty seconds. Then if it doesn’t pan out we write off the goal as a big fat failure and move on.

Maybe you could take the same approach to your marketing? Manageable goals that feel good?

Blogs

Thinking of writing a blog? Why not aim for once a month? 12 blog ideas, one a month.

Newsletters

Starting a newsletter? You could send it out fortnightly? Keep it short. Maybe it’s the highlights from what you’ve shared on social media this week?

Email lists

Want to grow your email list? Pick a number and aim to grow it by that amount of people each month. If you added 12 people a month you’d have an email list of 120 by the end of the year. A simple download, quiz or checklist tailored to what your audience needs is a great lead magnet and will help you grow your list.

Over to you

There are 4 months left of this year. What target could you set yourself?

What would help you move your business forward?
